BUSINESS SECRETARY BOOSTS SHEFFIELD

Lord Mandelson was in Sheffield at the end of November, launching the search for a Made in Sheffield award winner - describing the honour as "a hallmark of business excellence". 

During his speech he commented on the passion and commitment of the business people here and the pride in Sheffield's past achievements and belief in its potential.  He said ours is a city with ‘’revolutionary ideas’’.  For more on this click here.

A report by Oxford Economics, published at the end of 2008, showed Sheffield to be far less vulnerable to the credit crunch than other large cities, mainly due to the diversity of the city's economy.

CITY CENTRE DEVELOPMENTS

Electric Works is currently undergoing a fit out which will be completed in time for the opening in March.

LEISURE, SPORT, RESTAURANTS AND HOTELS

Sheffield hotels are showing a strong occupancy rate driven by major events at the Sheffield Arena.


3 new hotels are opening in 2009: 
the Copthorne, Jury’s Inn and the Premier Inn (which has announced plans to open its first fully self check-in hotel).

The British Volleyball Federation staged the 1st Round of the Volleyball World Championships at EIS Sheffield from the 2nd - 4th January 2009.  For more on this click here.

SHEFFIELD IN THE MEDIA

In Spring 2009, Channel 4 will broadcast the Made in Sheffield film.  Extremely well received at Doc/Fest in November and directed by Don Letts, the film is the story behind Tony Christie's Made in Sheffield album.

The Financial Times spent some time in Sheffield during January to do a feature on 'Business in Yorkshire' and to produce an associated short film for their website.  Creativesheffield’s Director of Innovation Gene DePrez was interviewed as well as Leader of the Council Paul Scriven.
