Sheffield is bidding to be the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013. The new UK City of Culture initiative aims to build on the success of Liverpool's year as the European City of Culture.
Becoming the UK City of Culture in 2013 would see Sheffield deliver a year long programme of cultural events and become a major focus for national attention.

REFURBISHED CRUCIBLE SET FOR FIRST PRODUCTION |
The Crucible theatre has just finished undergoing its £15.3 million, 2 year redevelopment and is now set for it's first production. An Enemy of the People will star Olivier award winning actor Sir Anthony Sher and will open in February.

SHEFFIELD 2018 - THANKS FOR BACKING THE BID! |
Thanks for showing your support for Sheffield's bid! Sheffield has been chosen to be one of 12 cities to be included in the England World Cup 2018 bid! Sheffield's bid included both grounds at Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. However, in announcing Sheffield, England 2018 have also selected the Sheffield Wednesday Football Stadium as their preferred venue to host games in the city.

NEW £25 MILLION BUILDING FOR SHEFFIELD HALLAM UNIVERSITY
Sheffield Hallam University has announced plans to develop a new £25m building that will become a city centre landmark thanks to its innovative design. Sheffield architects Bond Bryan have been appointed by the University to design the building, which will sit within the city's Cultural Industries Quarter.

SCIENTISTS' BREAKTHROUGH IN PRODUCTION OF BIOFUELS
A team of scientists from the University of Sheffield have scooped an international award in recognition of their work on an innovative device which will make the production of alternative biofuels more energy efficient.

Oneida, an American corporation which claims to be the world's biggest cutlery company, has chosen Sheffield-based digital marketing agency Quba to spearhead its new sales drive, awarding Quba a six figure contract to create the initiative.

The European Figure Skating Championships are to be held in England for the first time in 20 years after Sheffield was successful in its bid to stage the prestigious event. The event will take place at the Sheffield Arena in 2012.
